Taiwan's indigenous peoples have no written language; they pass down their history through oral storytelling. In Africa, the Griot serves as the bard who maintains the tradition of oral history. Inspired by the theory of human origins in Africa and the concept of a tribe having a Griot, we use the ancient Paiwan rain-praying melody to sing the maritime story of the African giant snail. This is a tribute to both unfamiliar yet similar cultures.

Lyrics of the video _ _

dingding, knock knock.
I would tell you a story about a remote creature.
It may be about the origin of human beings.
However, before that, I will crack the shell and take the snail out.
Cook with traditional crops like shell-flower leaves, laillu and millet.
We make this precious traditional food called cinavu
specially for welcoming special guests on important days. Aya!

dingding, walk slowly.
Walk across and leave a long path of mucus, like snot.
The elders like its snot.
Cooking soup with samaq, sameci and redflower ragleaf.
Redflower ragleaf is originally from South America.
The Japanese government worried if people in the colony were starving,
so they flew above the mountains and spread the seeds from planes.
Okra is snails’ fellow townsman, sticky like snails.
Oh, not for you? it’s for the old. The young want Macdonald’s. Aya!

dingding, knock knock.
On rainy days, many snails are out there for free. When I was little, snails were hard to find.
was said that foreigners were buying them.
Before I was born, there were not many high-rises.
*Payrang were as poor as we were and cooked snail dishes.
Now they see snails disgusting.
We indigenous people still like to pick them for food. Aya!

(* Payrang, a term used by aboriginals to reffer to Han ethic people.)

dingding, take your time. (life story)
Where are the snails from? Do they land by sea or by air?
It was said that long time ago, there was a far-away empire on which the sun never sets.
The beautiful queen’s strong naval fleet kept extending her power.
The native East African snails followed the path and departed for the Age of Exploration with expansion of the empire.
First arrival on Madagascar, and then traveling from Sri Lanka to Nanyang Malay Peninsula.
An adventure of nearly ten-thousand-kilometer long.
The Japanese governors brought in twelve of them from Singapore and wished to make a fortune.
Out of expectation, snails ate a lot and bred fast. An agricultural disaster. Aya!

dingding, knock knock.
Invasive species can’t stop secreting mucus. That is such a difficult thing to tackle.
Clean it up. Some people don’t like eating its snot so.
The leaves of paper mulberry which goats and deer love can be used to remove the mucus easily.
Paper mulberry is a native plant to Taiwanese. Bark can be used to make clothes.
Austronesian peoples carried this material culture on their migration journey to ten-thousands kilometer away;
East to the Easter Island, west to Madagascar, north to Hawaii, south to New Zealand.
They ran farther than snails. Aya!

dingding, creep slowly. (specimen)
How about us? Who are we? Where are we from?
Maybe we can ask snails for answers and follow them home.
Take our redflower ragleaf, sama, laillu and ingredients to prepare snails dishes,
seal all of them as a gift for a visit,
sail into the imagination of human’s origin.
The snails' hometown might be ours as well. Aya!
